LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD:No more secrets
We look at the uses for laser treatment... and its remarkable results
JODIE* was a 34-year-old woman with a secret. Every day, shed set her alarm for 5am to get to the bathroom before her husband woke up...to shave off the facial hair he knew nothing about.
For more than a decade, the smartly-dressed office worker went to extraordinary lengths to hide her problem from everyone who knew her, sometimes shaving twice a day to disguise the regrowth of thick, dark hair on her chin and upper lip.
So to say the staff at The Laser Clinic changed her life is no exaggeration.
When Jodie arrived at West Swindon clinic she explained her problem to the staff there, then broke down in tears. But seven or eight visits later, after a series of laser treatments, the unwanted hair was gone for good along with Jodies long held secret.
She had become extremely adept at making sure no one ever found out about it, but it was making her life a misery, said Hannah Ashworth, who manages The Laser Clinic with owner Carol Laskey. Her treatment was literally life-changing. She didnt have to get up early any more, she didnt have to stop people touching her face all the time. She had a whole new life.
The Laser Clinic opened in 2008, offering medical and cosmetic treatment to men and women to make them look and feel good.
Hair removal is one of the most popular treatments on offer but others include acne treatment, mole removal, tattoo removal, Botox and fillers and even hair restoration all carried out by registered nurses at the clinic, which is categorised as an independent hospital and housed discreetly at the Basepoint Business Centre in Westlea.
Another patient who has plenty to thank the clinic for is Carrie*, a mum of two who had never taken her children swimming due to the embarrassment of ingrowing hairs on her legs and along her bikini line. The hairs had caused abscesses and consequently scarring, but with a course of laser treatment the hair was effectively removed, resulting in smooth skin and no further angry red spots and marks. No longer ashamed of her legs, she happily took her boys to the pool from then onwards.
The laser uses an intense pulse of light to destroy the hair follicle and stop it growing back. On average, patients need around six sessions before they are hair-free, but that can can vary from person to person. There is very little discomfort it feels a bit like being gently flicked with an elastic band, said Hannah and the resulting warmth is efficiently cooled by a special machine. Treatment on the underarm area can take as little as 10 minutes each time, while legs and bikini line take up to 90 minutes. All areas of the body can be treated, except around the eyes.
A current offer has hair removal treatments at half price (underarms would cost 42.50 per treatment instead of 85), but all year you can get 10 per cent off if you book three sessions, or one session free when you book six.
Botox another popular service is also currently on offer at 99 for one area of the face, 180 for two and 280 for three.
The Laser Clinic is at Unit 9 of the Basepoint Business Centre, Rivermead Drive, Westlea. Telephone 01793 602480 or go to www.swindonlaserclinic.co.uk for more details.
