Flames on water, a glowing pampering and food that is Art!
The Vineyard is not in Wiltshire, its just over the border in Berkshire, but if you ever have the pleasure of staying here, you wont care! Our stay was to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and my wife Emma was very excited to be staying in a five-star hotel. As we drove up, she exclaimed repeatedly Theres fire on the water! And there is.
We were greeted by Jordan who showed us to our room. All the rooms here are named after types of wine, and the dresser was laid out with hand-made truffles and a card wishing us a happy anniversary a nice touch.
I had booked a little pampering surprise for Emma, so we went down to the spa for her facial treatment. As we arrived, several ladies swarmed from the door behind the desk and surrounded my wife, whisking her away into the depths of that most secret of rooms, like a queen surrounded by her handmaidens. Meanwhile I took the opportunity to enjoy the lovely large round pool, spa, sauna and steam room, all set within a California-style setting as an American it felt just like I was back home for a short while.
My wife emerged from the recesses of the treatment room literally glowing from her facial. Even I can say it made a difference, not only in her skin, but in and of herself too. She excitedly told me all that went on, and showed me a card of all the recommended oils and creams for her specific skin type.
We dressed for dinner (jacket and tie for me!) and enjoyed aperitifs before being seated for dinner in a private alcove with a great view of the fire dancing on the water.
We were presented with an extensive wine list that can only be described as a bible definitely something for the connoisseur. We made our menu selection and as each of our courses arrived, the waiters introduced the chefs creation.
The food presented isnt just a meal, or as the website says a gastronomic affair, this is Art! A complete experience that encompasses all the senses: eyes, nose, ears, mouth and even touch. Course after course came, with just the right amount of time between each, until finally the pudding arrived, with a small sugarcraft placard announcing our 10th wedding anniversary. Its the small touches that really make things special, not the grandiose gestures, but we had plenty of both here at the Vineyard. ETHAN MORGENTHALER
