On Wednesday, 2nd March 2011, Rose Hill Westonbirt preparatory school staged its annual Inter Schools Cross Country event (now in its 6th year). 460 pupils from 17 primary and preparatory schools attended (including Sherston, Leighterton, Ann Edwards, Stonar, Rendcomb, Rodmarton and Hatherop Castle) making it the one of the largest events of its kind in the area. The event was staged around the main sports fields of Westonbirt School (the senior girls school with which Rose Hill Westonbirt shares facilities). The event started with a bang literally as the sounds of Westonbirt Schools Samba Band resonated around the 210 acres of grounds. The children soon warmed up dancing around to the beat of the drums, before being officially welcomed by Neil Shaw, Headmaster of Rose Hill Westonbirt, and being called up for their individual races. With 46 children running in some races and up to 90 running in the U10 and U11 girls races, competition was fierce.

Each race took them cross-country on a course around the school grounds, ranging from 1500 metres for the U8s and U9s to 2200 metres for the U10s and U11s. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and many personal bests were achieved as they competed in the glorious spring sunshine. Westonbirt School girls also helped out, by running as hares and encouraging all the children around the course.

Headmaster, Neil Shaw, commented we are very fortunate to have grounds which lend themselves so well to this Inter Schools Cross Country event and there has been a great atmosphere with all the schools competing here today. Our sports teachers, Cheryl Clifton and Mary Worsfold, put a lot of effort into ensuring that everything runs smoothly and we enjoy hosting this annual sporting event. Westonbirt Schools Samba Band helped to set the tone and it has been a fabulous day.

After the races, team teas and refreshments were served in the gardens of Rose Hill Westonbirt before all the schools departed.

The pupils of Rose Hill Westonbirt were among those that received certificates and gave some sterling runs including:-

U8 girls: Ellie Webster (3rd) and Rachel Hatherall (4th)
U8 boys: Ben Bayliss (9th)
U9 boys: Jack Musselwhite (4th)
U10 boys: Robert Segrave-Daly (3rd)
U11 girls: Ysabella Sach (11th)

As well a strong academic focus, sport plays an integral part of life at Rose Hill Westonbirt. The games programme incorporates track and field athletics, swimming, tennis, golf and, of course, cross-country. Further up the school the pupils also receive specialist coaching in rugby, football, cricket, hockey, netball and rounders. Additional sports are introduced as part of the after-school activity programme, including golf, fencing and judo.

Rose Hill Westonbirts next Open Morning will take place on Saturday, May 14th (9:30am 12:30pm).
