The hoist is of particular interest to Devizes as it has local builder Henry Ashs name cast into its base. Henry Ash is first recorded as a builder in 1830 and his business continued until at least 1906. Its design suggests a mid-19th Century date and is a very nice example of craftsmanship with the skills of a carpenter and blacksmith combined. The hoist was originally mounted at first floor level and was used to lift sacks of grain into the upper store.

Devizes was one of the centres of the corn trade in Wiltshire, and hence the Corn Exchange building in the Market Place of Devizes.

In the 1860s Henry Ash took over the building at 13 Bridewell Street, Devizes which had previously been the Duke of Wellington pub and this provided him with a back yard for his materials, tools and workshop. By the 1880s he had moved next door to number 14. Over the years he was responsible for a number of buildings and no doubt much repair work in the area.

Graham Warner, owner and vendor of The Old Granary said; I bought the property at a local auction and was enchanted by the history and uniqueness of it. It was a difficult task to get the balance right between preserving the history and by giving it a new lease of life and a proper role in the 21st century. Having had a stylish and sympathetic makeover however it still depicts the hallmarks of its previous life and continues to stand as an ambassador for local heritage!

Mr Warner further said; In renovating the property I wanted to look after the environment and sustainability are issues that matter to me. I have made it as eco-friendly as possible and all materials have been sourced locally.

Doug Roseaman of Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Long Street, Devizes said; The Archive at the Museum in Long Street is an excellent source of research material for Devizes and the whole of Wiltshire. They have a good run of Gilmans directories for Devizes in the 19thC and these list the occupants of most houses, not just businesses. The Archive also has many business bill headings including a couple for Ash.
