John Hannavy interviews member of the RAF at Lyneham

Plots, medics and dogs... John Hannavy meets more of those who work at RAF Lyneham

The Hercules C130-J was sitting waiting for us on the tarmac, engines already running, while my camera bag went through the same sort of baggage X-rays we see every time we turn up at a commercial airport. Lyneham has long been involved in troop and passenger movements as well as logistics, so there is an air terminal to rival anything you would find at many regional airports except for the duty free booze and perfume shops that is! We waited a few minutes while the Princess Royal drove into the terminal and boarded her waiting passenger plane, off on another official engagement, and then it was our turn to be driven out to the waiting line of Hercules transports.
To say I was looking forward to the experience is an understatement, and although our programme had been reduced from two flights to one the weather was not good enough to do the beach landings and take-offs which had been planned the aircraft was still going to be home for the next five hours as we flew up to Newcastle and out over the North Sea to spend several hours while our pilots practised air-to-air refuelling.
