An astounding 35,000 people were on site on the last day of this three-day festival at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury. Kate Wood was one of them, were you?

This years WOMAD"(World of Music, Arts and Dance) was a musical education, introducing me to such outstanding performers as Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali (Pakistan), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara (UK/Gambia), and so many, many more. I"was ashamed not to have discovered such richness before, as so many around me obviously had, but to celebrate their tenth year attending WOMAD, Radio 3 has opened up its world music archive (see bbc.co.uk/radio3), a fantastic resource that I"will certainly be making use of.

With activities and workshops for adults and children complementing the five music stages, there was never a dull moment. Plenty of food outlets offered a variety of eating options, and if you were an enterprising small boy, there was money to be made collecting discarded plastic drinks cups. Reimbursed at 10p each, the record one pair claimed was 64!

A festival is for life, not just for summer is the WOMAD dictum, and before next years event takes place here (29-31 July 2011), we will be featuring an article in this magazine on the collaboration between the WOMAD"Foundation and Wiltshire Music Centre as their World Music Connections programme is introduced to local schools.

Finally, thank you to the three teenage girls whose sweet voices travelled across the otherwise silent, sleepy campsite as they sang from the sleeping bags of their tent: Good, night, campers. Good night, campers. Good night, campers, its been a lovely day.
