Rose Hill Westonbirt School is set in a beautiful location in 210 acres of parkland. The school has made the most of this setting by also incorporating it into our curriculum through the outdoor learning programme. Pupils are lucky enough to spend a double period each week in the schools spinney, a wooded outdoor area where children are encouraged to explore the unique environment in order to support and develop their learning.

Come rain, snow, blustering winds or glorious sunshine, pupils at the school enjoy activities in the spinney. Indeed, the Forest School motto (where the outdoor education concept originated) is theres no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! Research has shown that children do benefit from an element of risk in learning and learning in an outdoor environment helps them to think creatively, stimulating them in a way that sitting within a classroom does not. Boys in particular respond extremely well to the outdoor environment - the change to the normal classroom immediately creates a different and exciting atmosphere for them. The idea is not to study nature and look at mini-beasts but to use the environment as an aid to help with their studies. This term, Year 1 pupils have enjoyed making musical instruments in the spinney, Year 4 have been studying literacy by creating words and acrostic poems using natural objects, and Year 6 have focused on science, including learning about producers, herbivores, carnivores and decomposers in the food chain. Pupils have also practised their culinary skills and baked their own scones whilst warming by the fire!

Rose Hill Westonbirt School is accredited by Forest Schools and a member of staff has attended the 5-week intensive course training in Forest School teaching. Headmaster Neil Shaw says the school is totally committed to making outdoor learning a part of school life. It makes learning for the children fun and the results have been quite staggering.

As well as academic success, strong emphasis is placed on music, sport, art and drama. Pupils at Rose Hill Westonbirt School are looking forward to the Summer Musical production, Scheherazade by Nick Perrin on Wednesday 29th June (2pm) and Thursday 30th June (5:30pm).
