Meet Stonars New Head

New Head of Stonar School, Elizabeth Thomas joined the school at the start of the autumn term. Elizabeth has enjoyed visiting the school over recent months, meeting many of the pupils, parents and staff. I have been impressed by the range of talents the pupils display, the friendly welcome given by all and the commitment demonstrated by the staff at the school, commented Elizabeth. There is a real sense of community and it is clear that no one is anonymous at Stonar.

Stonar pupils benefit from small classes and superb facilities which encourage them to aim high and adopt an adventurous approach to all aspects of school life. The school, catering for pupils from 2 -18 years, is well known for its equestrian centre but has many strengths. Outstanding pastoral care provides the support which allows pupils to achieve and exceed expectations both academically and in a wide range of extra-curricular, sporting and performing arts activities.

Elizabeth, who has been Deputy Head at Leighton Park School for four years, studied English and Mediaeval Studies at Lancaster University before completing her postgraduate training at Bath University. She has worked in maintained and independent schools in a variety of posts including Head of English and Assistant Head at Luckley-Oakfield School, also a girls day and boarding school.

Elizabeth believes that schools offering boarding and day facilities provide families with a flexible and supportive environment in which all pupils can flourish. Stonar is firmly based on a boarding model so pupils, whether day or boarding, benefit from the added value of a 24/7 community, she commented. Parents can relax, knowing that all interests are catered for and that staff are committed to developing the potential of each individual. The schools comprehensive transport service allows local pupils easy access to the school.

Elizabeth, who is a keen gardener, enjoys going to the theatre and taking long walks in the countryside. She has a home in Somerset and says her family is looking forward to being based full-time in the West Country.
