Swindon & Cricklade Railway is pleased to announce the visit of 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 3650 to the volunteer-run railway, for an extended visit to the end of the year, and possibly longer.

Built in 1939 at Swindon Works for the Great Western Railway, 3650 was one of a class of 863 of the 57xx class of 0-6-0 pannier tanks.

Although not a glamorous locomotive, nonetheless, the visit by the locomotive to home turf at Swindon is very welcome, and it is hoped it will be a big attraction to families and enthusiasts alike.

Especially as it is the first time since being restored back to full mechanical health in 2008, the locomotive has left Didcot Railway Centre.

3650 was one of a small number of these locomotives that were sold by British Railways, into private industry in 1963; going to Stephenson Clarke Ltd, a private colliery operator at Gwaun-cae-Gurwen in South Wales, where it was painted blue with red lettering along the tanks.

It was subsequently purchased by a private buyer in 1969, and later that year, arrived at Didcot Railway Centre, where the necessary heavy repairs could be carried out.

After some 20 years of restoration effort, 3650 finally returned to traffic in July 2008, and now has the traditional Great Western railway livery of green and black.

3650 is due to arrive at the railway on Friday 1 July, and will be in action on many Sundays, and during special events throughout the rest of the year
